In vitro Bioactivity Assessment of Novel Composites Based on Calcium Aluminate Cement

چکیده
The effect of pseudowollastonite (Pw) additions on the in vitro bioactivity and compressive strength of composites based on calcium aluminate cement (CAC) was studied. Composites were prepared by mixing calcium aluminate clinker with pseudowollastonite (5 and 10 wt%) at a w/c ratio of 0.4 (0.015M LiCl aqueous solution). In order to assess the in vitro bioactivity and compressive strength, composites (CAC 5Pw and CAC 10Pw) were immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 °C for 1, 7, 14 or 21 days. Analyses of the surface cements after immersion in SBF revealed the formation of a bonelike apatite layer in both composites, increasing the amount of this Ca, P rich compound as the Pw content was increased. The compressive strength of the composites decreased as the pseudowollastonite content was increased. However, the strength of the composites was higher than that established for bone cements in the ASTM F451 standard.

On the fracture toughness of calcium aluminate cement–phenol resin composites
Macro-defect-free (MDF) cement with high flexure strength has been an active research area over several decades. To study the tensile properties of these materials, it is essential to understand the mode I crack propagation. In this article, cleavage cracking in calcium aluminate cement (CAC)–phenol resin composites is analyzed based on an energy method. The crack-trapping effect of the cement ...

Calcium phosphate cements have received much attention in recent decades owing to their biocompatibility, in situ handling, and shaping abilities. However, their low initial mechanical strength is still a major limitation. On the other hand, calcium aluminate cements (CACs) set fast and have a high initial strength and good corrosion resistance in contact with body fluids, making them excellent...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the shear bond strength of a novel calcium aluminate-based cement, EndoBinder (EB), to dentine in comparison with Grey and White Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA). MATERIALS AND METHODS Root canal hemi-sections obtained from 30 extracted molar teeth were embedded in self-polymerized acrylic resin and were grounded wet in order to obtain a flat dentine surface. Next, the r...

The major hydraulic phase in all the calcium aluminate cements including ciment fondue is CA (CaAl2O4). Once hydrated, it starts to form the hexagonal crystals of CAH10 and C2AH8 that depending on the time and temperature of hydration convert to the cubic crystals of C3AH6 and AH3. The nature, sequence, ...
